Apple Kills Two Birds With One Stone

I’m sure everyone else is covering this, but Apple has announced today that they will be selling higher-quality (256k AAC versus 128k AAC) DRM-free music from the EMI back catalog for $1.29 a track. You’ll also be able to upgrade your existing purchases for essentially the price difference–$0.30 a song. Both versions of songs will be available.

The question is: will Apple also offer the same deal to independent artists who didn’t want DRM in the first place? And will $1.29 become the new price point for high-quality DRM-free music? Quite likely, given Apple’s power in the marketplace.
