I am taking a couple of online classes: a CISSP Prep Class with Global Knowledge, and a Intrusion Detection class with SANS. Global Knowledge currently uses a tool from iLinc Communications to provide the class. SANS is using a tool from Elluminate. Having sat through 7 sessions with Global Knowledge and only 1 session with […]
Even though I’d had my share of issues with Gimp in general, it’s nice to see that they are working on a native Mac port, i.e. one that doesn’t require X11 to run. Wish they could also make it less obtuse to use as well, but that seems to be a general problem with Gimp.
Some time ago, I had obtained an old iBook thru work. It had Mac OS X 10.3.9 loaded on it. There was a lot of crap on it that wasn’t mine, and I wasn’t entirely convinced the OS install was sound. So I decided to reload the OS on it. Well, that turned out to […]
Found a few cool things today:
QTAmateur: This will become my new default media player. It is essentially a “free” version of QuickTime Pro, meaning it has just about all the functionality in QuickTime Pro without having to spend $30 on it. It’d be nice if it replaced the QuickTime Plugin so I could save media […]
As I’m going through my music collection in iTunes–all of which I’ve ripped from my own CD collection, thank you very much–I am finding some tracks did not rip very well. I know that mp3 adds some artifacts to music. I’m not talking about that. Some tracks have pops or just don’t rip at all. […]
For once in my life, my inboxes are zero. That includes the RSS reader! Of course, I still have some things in my “to do” file in some of my other inboxes, but hey, I’ll take victories where I can get them. Meanwhile, here is the last of the debris:
Lunch Break Web Worker Style: Most […]
I had gotten a comment from Stefan on my Roughly Drafted post that was less than complimentary about Roughly Drafted’s author, Daniel Eran. So I asked Stefan who I should read to get the other side of the story. He suggested Paul Thurrott’s site Internet Nexus. I’m vaguely familiar with Paul through the Windows Weekly […]
If you’re a fan of the company formerly known as Apple Computer, you hate Microsoft, or are somewhere in between, I highly recommend you point your web browser or RSS reader at Roughly Drafted. Daniel Eran posts some very insightful analysis of Apple with respect to Microsoft and the rest of the computer industry. His […]

While I was in California last week, my LaFonera, the little WiFi router from FON, that I had gotten for free thru GigaOm arrived. I finally unpacked it this morning and had a gander at it. Very small. White with the splat FON logo on it. Previously, I had gotten a Linksys WRT54G from FON, […]

Being that I am in the Bay Area, and my Aunt and her kids live down in the Santa Cruz area, every once in a while I feel the need to go down there and see them. This time, I even gave them more than a few hours of notice that I was coming so […]

Crunchgear led me to an article on tech.co.uk about Apple Opening up FairPlay DRM. If this report is to be believed, companies that make authorized accessories for the iPod will be able to license FairPlay DRM to use in their accessories. In theory, this will let their partners “under the kimono” so to speak and […]

Even though Andy Abramson said on KenRadio the other day that it’s kind of unfair to compare a shipping product with a vaporware product, I think this article is worth a read. The points they mention all seem valid, at least based on what’s been said about the iPhone to this point.
For what it’s worth, […]

Yeah, I’ve run Parallels full screen on my MacBook before, but this is completely different–using Windows XP as the base OS for my MacBook! After doing all the work to get it and the Mac drivers loaded, it’s quite impressive speed-wise. Of course, my first-generation MacBook has 2 gigs of RAM. Does quite an impressive […]

Today, I finally got my Christmas present: 160gb internal drive for my MacBook and an external 250gb USB2/FireWire drive. The idea: I can do regular backups with a program called SuperDuper! and, in case something goes wrong, do a partial or complete restore.
I figured a good way to test this functionality was to backup the […]

I have been frustrated with Democracy Player on the Mac. There are a couple of issues, specifically:
If you click on another channel while you’re watching a video, the video stops playing and you lose your place!
The bittorrent support in Democracy Player doesn’t work very well. I frequently find that that my torrents don’t start, not […]
